How to remove an invalid icon from Control Panel?

How to remove an invalid icon from Control Panel?

Summary

When you open Control Panel, you may see a invalid or non-functioning icon, which was probably left behind after a incomplete uninstall of a software.
Control Panel items can be registered as a namespace, or it can be implemented in a DLL (with .CPL extension) that exports the CPlApplet function.

Removing the invalid icon from Control Panel

Determining the corresponding .CPL file name

To determine the corresponding .CPL file for an invalid or non-functioning Control Panel item, use these steps:

  • 1. Click Start, Control Panel Right-click the invalid icon and choose Create Shortcut
Click Yes when you see the following dialog:

Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?

In the Desktop, right-click the newly created shortcut and choose Properties.

Click the Change Icon button.
You'll then see the actual CPL file name in the resulting dialog.
Using the CPL file name, you should be able to trace the respective application.

If that application has already been uninstalled, then you may simply delete the .CPL file as you no longer require that. (Thanks to Mike Williams for the above tip.)

The Best Choice Between Standby, Hibernate and Shutdown

The Best Choice Between Standby, Hibernate and Shutdown

Standby
Standby is like "nodding off" during class or a meeting.
The computer keeps your applications running and documents open.
Power is feeding to your computer memory, but peripherals are powered off and the hard drive power is minimized.
The computer "wakes up" quickly from standby mode, and should look just like it did when you walked away.
The biggest drawback of standby mode is the power usage, and it should only be used when leaving the computer for a brief period.

The Best Choice Between Standby, Hibernate and Shutdown

Hibernate
Computing hibernation is more like a nap.
It recalls all open documents and applications, but shuts down power to the computer.
Again, the computer should look exactly as it did when you selected hibernate mode, but the computer takes longer to "wake up" from hibernate.
The hibernate mode uses no power, but it is still active enough to automatically restart and begin using power again in the middle of the night. A virus or scheduled tasks can cause this power-wasting function.
Here is a Microsoft summary of the two "sleep" oions.

Cambodia girls undergo “shading” ceremony to make coming-of-age

Despite modernization, many Asian families continue to play great importance in holding traditional and religious ceremonies.
In Cambodia, for instance, girls have to undergo what is know as a “shading ceremony” to make a daughter’s coming of age.
For the Khieng family living south of Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh, a shading ceremony is taking place.

Under Khmer traditional, it is an occasion created for girls to show that she is old enough and ready to face up to any new obstacles in life.
So for 6 days, Khieng Kimsan is expected to stay inside her room, shaded from any bright lights.
Cambodias believe this will make her healthy and beautiful.
Khieng is allowed to have contact only with female members of her family and eat vegetarian food like fruits and nuts.

“During my meals, my parents give me rice with sugar, banana or pineapple. But I prefer to take porridge or noodles. I feel quite strange staying inside all the time. So sometimes I water the banana and sugar cane plants which I grow inside my room.”

Khieng’s parents will also invite a monk to come to their house to pray.
